Arcade artist creates with charcoal

The sketches done by Stacy Gertis are filled with life. Gertis loves creating these works of art and has enjoyed drawing since she was very young.

Stacy Gertis of Arcade considers it a joy to be able to create beautiful works of art with charcoal and has crafted pieces of local attractions such as the Arcade and Attica Depot as well as of Niagara Falls.

She grew up in Vermont, a state known for its picturesque landscape. Four years ago she moved to this area, after marrying her husband, Brad. She is now a mother of two, following the birth of her second daughter in October.

Gertis says she likes to make time for herself, “while the girls are napping,” to draw. “It’s a great stress reliever for me.”

Drawing has always been a part of Gertis’ life.

“In elementary and high school, those would always be my favorite times—the art classes,” she explained. “And instead of sending me to a regular summer camp, my mom always sent me to art camps during the summer months.”

After graduating from high school, she went to Onondaga Community College and then to Castleton University, where she studied graphic design. Since graduation, Gertis has worked in web design, and currently is working for GenTech in Arcade doing their web marketing. But, Gertis still enjoys the time to herself when she can pick up a pencil and draw.

Utilizing her favorite medium – charcoal – Gertis has created a portfolio filled with beautiful works and has been commissioning her pieces for about 15 years.

“It makes me feel a sense of accomplishment to create my pieces of artwork,” Gertis said. “I can’t even begin to describe the feeling after creating something so special.”

“One example of my work is memorial portraits of clients’ pets. I have had multiple people shed tears when they see them and the fact that I can create something so meaningful means the world to me,” Gertis said.

Gertis is able to do drawings from pictures, and she says when she gets “a little homesick” for Vermont, she sends for pictures of the state’s landscape, and enjoys drawing from those pictures. This helps her to feel a connection with the places back in her home state.

She would love to do more work for others and is willing to discuss the prospect. She is able to create charcoal drawings from photographs; Gertis can also sketch people and places live, too.

Some of her pieces include drawings of the Arcade and Attica depot and Niagara Falls.
